When I was a young monkey, I enjoyed watching while people played computer games. My uncle played Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, Columns and some motorbike-racing thing; my mother played Prince of Persia, Lemmings and Solitaire. I watched this for quite a while. One day my mother was playing a new game. I saw her controlling a young man sword fighting an ugly pirate. I later found out that this game was called Monkey Island. I did not know it then, but I was to become a swashbuckling, insulting pirate fan. Later we got a new PC. My mother purchased a white label double pack including Monkey Island 1 and 2. I enjoyed these games and my mother and I helped each other complete them. (At the same time we were also playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis).
We played MI1 first, but got very stuck on Monkey Island (I cant remember what exactly). So we moved on to MI2. We completed it and then went back to MI1. We finished the game.
A few years later CMI came out. I saw it in a gaming shop in Canterbury and immediately wanted it. I got it for my birthday. Tragically I had to wait for a year before I could play it. For some reason it didn't install properly. When I did play however, it was great.
Then EMI came out. I wanted that a lot too. When I got it for Christmas it again did not install. There was a problem with our 3D thing. It took a month before I could play it.
While playing EMI, I started searching the web to find if any MI sites existed. I found the Scumm Bar. From there I found a lot more sites. Now I have my own Monkey Island fan site and I am proud.
